Putting a horse into training at minimal/no cost: turfdirectory.com for Breeders, Owners and Pinhookers

turfdirectory.com’s service for Breeders, Owners and Pinhookers is perfect if you want to “prove” your horse’s ability prior to selling. It offers all the fun of horse ownership and knowing that your horse is being “made” in a top training yard without any financial risk.

turfdirectory.com leases your horse and puts it into training under one of our Racing Clubs which picks up the training fees. You become a free Golden Shareholder with the yndicate which means you get Owners Badges whenever the horse runs.

At the end of the lease period (usually a year but which can be matched to a sale date or even of a particular race) the horse reverts to you and can be sold at hopefully an enhanced over an unproven horse because of his/her racing record.

  • You choose the trainer from our Top Trainers List. All training fees are paid by the Club;
  • You name the horse;
  • The horse is fully insured;
  • At the end of the lease the horse reverts back to you.

For full details of how the scheme works see the FAQ below.

turfdirectory.com services for breeders: overview of our Breeding-to-Training young horse leasing scheme

turfdirectory.com works with small breeders by leasing progeny—particularly young horses out of unproven mares—then placing them with leading trainers and using our Racing Club memberships to cover all the training fees, management and other costs associated with ownership including:

  • keep and training fees;
  • insurance;
  • farriery;
  • veterinary treatment;
  • other health and welfare treatments;
  • transport costs;
  • entries;
  • jockey fees; and
  • legal fees associated with the creation of the lease.

For the duration of the lease the Breeder gets the benefit of a Golden Share in the club in which their horse is enrolled ensuring guaranteed Owner badges for each course at which the horse runs, a small share of the prize money won and other benefits enjoyed by golden share members.

At the end of the agreed lease period ownership and posession reverts to the breeder who then has what is hopefully a proven horse with an enhanced value and they can choose what they want to do with it.

The scheme is designed to enable breeders to have all the fun of racing their horses without the associated training costs, enabling their horse’s true value as a runner to be better ascertained and hopefully enhancing the value of the horse at the end of the training period.

What is required to put a horse into training under the Breeding-to-Training Scheme?

Primarily a fit and healthy horse with good racing prospects that you own and want to run. Despite the scheme’s name you don’t necessarily have to be the breeder. We accept pinhooked horses bought as foals, yearlings and stores as long as you have title.

We normally look for the horse to be ready to go into training which means that it has been ridden away. Many breeders prefer to use their own people for this but if you wish us to break and ride the horse we will charge £500 to do so. This should be the only charge you incur. All other charges and fees for the period of the lease will be met by turfdirectory.com.

You will receive a Golden Share in the turfdirectory.com Club your horse is enrolled in which entitles you to a share of winnings and other benefits.

What is the duration of a Breeding-to-Training scheme lease?

Typically a lease is for one calendar year but it can be for another period if you require it.

Other periods might take into consideration the duration of the turf flat racing season, a particular race after which the breeder seeks to sell the horse, or a preordained sales date.

It must however be agreed at the outset so all parties can plan accordingly. We will not normally agree to the early termination of a lease under any circumstances other than provided for in the lease document.

Can any horse be approved for the turfdirectory.com Breeding-to-Training scheme?

Any breeder (or owner) can apply to place any horse in the scheme but acceptance of horses is subject to vetting both for health and quality of bloodlines and conformation.

turfdirectory.com Racing is making a substantial financial commitment on behalf of its members and the horse must be healthy and suitable for racing.

We will normally arrange for our agent and a vet to view the horse at a mutually convenient time and date to you and agreement is normally reached on the day as to whether the horse is suitable for the scheme. In some circumstances in the case of a backward type we may defer approval until a later date.

Does turfdirectory.com pay to lease a horse under Breeding-to-Training?

Under almost all circumstances no we don’t pay to lease your horse, aside for the nominal payment of a guinea which is provided for under our standard Lease Agreement.

turfdirectory.com’s financial commitment to your horse is a substantial one and includes all fees including training, insurance, legal fees, veterinary bills and all other costs (around £20,000 in total) while in our care against which our club members offset against any prize money during the period of their ownership. At the end of the lease period the horse will be returned to you and will hopefully be of more value than when you sent he/she to us.

Hence you will not receive any substantial payment for leasing the horse but you will receive benefits equivalent to a turfdirectory.com “Golden Share” in the club in which the horse is enrolled which will include guaranteed entry at any course where the horse runs  and a share of any prize money.

Can I choose which trainer my horse goes to under Breeding-to-Training?

To a great extent yes, but they must be a training yard with which turfdirectory.com Racing has an agreement—or can reach one.

We will normally provide you with a roster of trainers we can use to train your horse and we will often make a recommendation.

Not all turfdirectory.com trainers will be available to you. Certain popular trainers fill up quickly but all our trainers are chosen for their ability to produce winning horses and many of them specialise. If you are not happy with the trainers we suggest we are happy for you to suggest a trainer to us and we will endeavour to reach agreement with them.

Which trainer will be used for your horse will always be discussed and will become part of the lease agreement. If you are not happy with the trainer we will not expect you to agree to lease the horse.

If for any reason circumstances change during the period of the lease (say due to trainer illness, death or bankruptcy) we will endeavour to reach agreement with you as to acceptable alternatives. (A procedure in the lease agreement provides for these and similar circumstances).

If I am not happy with the trainer within the duration of the lease can I demand my horse is sent elsewhere?

We do not normally change trainers mid term except in extremely unusual circumstances (bankruptcy, illness, death) and in any event for the period of the lease you have the same rights as other owners with a Golden Share which does not including demanding a trainer change.

What if I have a filly and she turns out to be a bit backward or not good enough?

We know that an unraced filly is preferable that was raced and turned out to be unsuitable.

Not every great mare was a great racehorse and not every great racemare was a good broodmare. So if we take your filly into the scheme and she turns out to be unsuitable we won’t run her just to give the racving club an outing — and with your agreement she will be returned to you, simple as that.

If I put a horse in the Breeding-to-Training scheme can I take it out before the lease ends?

No, the lease is a legally binding agreement between you as the owner/breeder of the horse whichAdd FAQ means that the club takes over the horse for a set period of time.

turfdirectory.com Racing contracts with its club members to make horses available to them for that period and incurs up-front costs by placing horses with trainers. Similarly we make a commitment to our trainers that the horse is their to train for the duration. Hence we require certainty for the full period of the lease. If a horse wins well and is the subject of offers then those offers cannot be taken up until the lease has ended. That is the commitment you make at the outset and we will almost always hold you to it.

If the horse doesn’t work out for any reason then we will continue with our commitment and in the same way if the horse turns out to be very good we expect you to meet your commitment to us.

I am not the breeder. I bought/pinhooked the horse as a foal/yearling/store. Can I still put the horse into training using the Breeding-to-Training scheme?

Yes as long as you have clear title to the horse. The scheme is called Breeding-to-Training because breeders are the most significant users but the scheme is open to anyone who owns a horse on identical terms to those outlined for breeders:

  • You provide the horse;
  • We cover the training fees and associated costs for the period of the lease (usually a year; or up to and including a specific race; or a specified sales date);
  • Through the period of the lease you get benefits equivalent to a Golden Share in the horse (guaranteed badges when he/she runs; other benefits and a share of any prize money);
  • At the end of the lease you get the horse back.

What is a turfdirectory.com Club Golden Share?

A Golden Share is a higher level of membership than a standard club membership. Typically a Golden Share in any turfdirectory.com Racing Club costs 2x as much as a standard ownership. We also give Golden Shares to breeders and owners placing horses with us under our horse leasing schemes.

As with standard ownership members gain an equal share in win and place prize money after trainer and jockey deductions. But a Golden Share provides the following additional benefits related to racegoing and betting:

  • Guaranteed complementary entrance Badges for all meetings where we have runners up to and including Listed Race class without any “balloting”;
  • Two Owner Badges plus two complementary  Owner’s Guest badges (with owner access privileges – access to Owners and Trainers Bars and Restaurants, viewing areas, car parks etc) up to and including Listed Race class;
  • Priority access to all meetings where we have runners up to Group Race class without any “balloting”;
  • Free access to turfdirectory.com’s “Golden Share” Betting and Betting Concierge Services.

Golden Shares are given as complementary privilege to owners and breeders placing horses in turfdirectory.com’s Breeding-to-Training schemes.
